Despite the foundations of the building that exists today were laid in 1909, it is established in 1887. The building, which has Neo-Greek and Neo-Classical features, is one of the oldest schools in Izmir. The building could only be completed after the proclamation of the Republic due to the Balkan Wars and the World War. The education process continued in other buildings during the war. But during the Gallipoli War, it could not produce any graduates that year because all its students were martyred.
Namık Kemal High School, which restarted education in its new building in 1925, also hosted Atatürk’s visit and set an example for the opening of new schools in Izmir.
You can visit the website to get more information about its history. However, I suggest you to visit the school when you go to izmir, see the building with your own eyes and take a journey into the past. You will also have the privilege of being able to pet the many cute cats that raised by the students in their garden and became the mascots of the school. But be careful, petting them can be addictive.
