This research plan outlines a comprehensive study focused on understanding the motivations, experiences, and challenges faced by young women participating in the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) program, particularly those from Türkiye and other non-EU countries. It aims to contribute to the program’s effectiveness and ensure that it effectively supports the empowerment of all female volunteers.

Purpose

The primary purpose of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing young women’s participation in ESC volunteering projects and assess the program’s impact on their personal and professional development. By examining the intersection of gender, nationality, culture, and socioeconomic status, the study will identify both the opportunities and obstacles women encounter within the program.

Research Methods

A mixed-methods approach will be employed, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques

Qualitative Methods

Longitudinal Interviews

18 interviews will be conducted over three rounds with six long-term ESC volunteers (three from Türkiye and three from EU). These interviews will focus on motivations, expectations, challenges, and reflections on their experiences.

Focus Groups

Four focus groups will be organized with 18 former female ESC volunteers, exploring their insights on best practices, program improvements, and challenges they encountered.

Quantitative Methods

Online Survey

A questionnaire will be developed based on the themes emerging from the interviews and focus groups. It will be distributed to at least 100 long-term ESC volunteers through accredited organizations in both Türkiye and EU countries.

Expected Results

The research is expected to deliver several key findings and recommendations:

Motivations and Expectations

The study will identify the reasons why young women choose to participate in ESC projects, particularly from Türkiye and other non-EU countries, and how their expectations evolve throughout their volunteering experience.

Challenges and Needs

The research will uncover the challenges women face during the application process, during their volunteer service, and upon returning home. This will inform the development of tailored support systems to address their specific needs.

Program Impact

The study will assess the impact of ESC projects on the personal and professional development of female participants, highlighting how the program contributes to their career prospects, skill development, and overall growth.

Cultural Integration

The research will explore how cultural integration can be facilitated more effectively, fostering harmonious relationships between volunteers and host communities.

Best Practices and Recommendations

Based on the research findings, the study will develop practical recommendations for ESC implementing organizations, policymakers, and future participants, aiming to optimize the program’s design and implementation to ensure greater inclusivity and empowerment.

Conclusion

This research plan aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ESC program’s impact on female volunteers from Türkiye and other non-EU countries. By exploring the interplay of gender, nationality, culture, and socioeconomic factors, the study will generate valuable insights and recommendations to improve the program, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and empowering environment for all women who choose to participate in the European Solidarity Corps.
