When I decided to spend two months in Izmir with Pi Youth Association, I knew it would be a great adventure, but I never imagined how deeply it would impact me.

Between the workshops, the incredible people I met, and the discovery of a fascinating city, these two months were intense, enriching, and full of surprises.

Giving, Learning, and Growing Through Workshops

As a volunteer, my main role was to lead English workshops with teenagers, children, and elderly people. Since my English wasn’t perfect, I had to adapt, find creative ways to communicate, and most importantly, dare to speak up. This challenge helped me develop skills I never thought I had: teaching, engaging an audience, and adapting to different generations.

Each workshop was a unique experience. With children, it was all about making learning fun and interactive. With teenagers, it was about encouraging them to express themselves. And with the elderly, the challenge was different: creating connections, sharing stories, and bringing something new into their daily lives. Every session left me with a deep sense of satisfaction, seeing the participants enjoy themselves, learn, and most importantly, share a genuine moment together.

Izmir: A City That Stole My Heart

From the moment I arrived, I was amazed by the energy and beauty of Izmir. This port city on the Aegean Sea has a unique atmosphere—vibrant, welcoming, and full of contrasts. Walking along the Kordon, exploring the Kemeralti Bazaar, watching the sunset from Asansör, and taking small trips around the region— every day was a new adventure.

The locals are incredibly friendly, always willing to help and have a conversation, even when language barriers exist. I loved immersing myself in the local culture, trying Turkish specialties, and feeling at home in a city that never really sleeps.

A Life-Changing Human Experience

This volunteering experience didn’t just allow me to develop new skills—it helped me grow as a person. I learned to step out of my comfort zone, believe in myself, handle unexpected situations, and fully enjoy the present moment.

I was also lucky to be surrounded by amazing fellow volunteers, from different backgrounds, with whom I shared laughter, discoveries, and unforgettable memories. The Pi Youth team was incredibly supportive, always there to guide and motivate us.

If you’re thinking about doing volunteering abroad, just go for it! These two months in Izmir have been one of the best experiences of my life, and I highly recommend it. A huge thank you to Pi Youth Association, the volunteers, the staff, and the city of Izmir for these magical moments. This experience will stay with me forever, and who knows? Maybe one day I’ll come back… in this incredible city
