As I pack my suitcase to return home after two months in Izmir, I realize just how much this experience has shaped me. This volunteering journey has been a true opportunity to discover a country I had never known before not only as a tourist, but by immersing myself in the daily life at the heart of the city. Taking public transport to work, sitting in a café after a long day, tasting local dishes… all these simple moments made me feel closer to the culture.
Over the weeks, I had the chance to explore not only Izmir itself, but also different parts of the region. Thanks to a few days off, I was also able to travel across Turkey and discover some truly unique landscapes the magic of Istanbul, the energy of Ankara, the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia, the white terraces of Pamukkale, and the beauty of Antalya by the Mediterranean Sea. Each of these places has its own charm, and together they have left me with unforgettable memories.
Volunteering itself has been a profoundly human experience. Through the workshops, we gave lessons to people of all ages. These exchanges allowed me to feel part of the local community sharing conversations with participants, and even extending those moments by going for coffee together after work. These simple yet meaningful connections gave real purpose to my involvement.
What I value most from these two months, however, are the friendships I built with other volunteers. Coming from all across Europe, they quickly became more than just teammates. Together, we exchanged ideas, discovered different perspectives, and most importantly, created unique memories endless conversations, laughter, shared adventures… all of it felt like being part of a second family.
Leaving Izmir, I carry with me a heart full of gratitude. This volunteering experience opened my eyes to a new culture, pushed me beyond my comfort zone, and gave me friendships that will last long after this project. It is not simply the end of a stay, but the continuation of a personal journey deeply enriched by these two intense months
